Irvine’s MSP Ruth Maguire has said that the UK Government’s new points-based immigration system risks “catastrophic damage” to businesses and public services in North Ayrshire.

The new system, which takes effect from January 01, 2021, was unveiled last week by Home Secretary Priti Patel MP, and will see free movement end with points assigned for specific skills, qualifications, salaries or professions and visas will only be awarded to those who gain enough points.

The controversial system has been heavily criticised by Scottish politicians with the Scottish Government reiterating its plans for a tailored migration system for Scotland - or risk preventing the workers needed to boost the country’s economy, fund public services, and respond to future demographic challenges.

Cunninghame South MSP, Ruth Maguire, said: “Our local industries, public services and NHS here in North Ayrshire are in danger. You simply can’t trust Boris Johnson - his government’s proposals will cause catastrophic damage for businesses in Cunninghame South and are completely out of touch with the needs of the Scottish economy.

“Industry and employers across the country recognise that getting the migration system right is absolutely vital for the future. As Scotland’s population grows older, we need the power to attract and retain the workers we need to fund our public services and allow our economy to flourish.

“This is the stark reality of the Tories’ Brexit Britain. It is now absolutely vital that political parties and industry leaders come together to back the SNP’s plans for a tailored migration system which works for Scotland.”
