A FIVE-YEAR-OLD has run more than 150 miles over two years as she completed her 50th Parkrun.

Brianna Whyte has become an inspiration to other runners in her hometown of Girvan, as she takes to the route every Saturday morning come rain or shine.

The Sacred Heart Primary pupil has impressed a flock of keen members after she joined the Parkrun to spend some quality time with her mum and enjoy a weekend stroll.

But after seeing all the runners pushing themselves to achieve their own personal best, Brianna decided she wanted to run her own race too.

Now she is a regular runner, completing the 5km route in 30 minutes and has become eagerly competitive as she sets her sights on becoming the quickest.

Proud mum, Angela told the Advertiser: “We first went down when it started in Girvan two years ago.

“I just thought we’d go and walk it, but she saw everyone running and wanted to run.

“I have just managed to run it, she’s faster than me now.

“It was just to bond as a mother and daughter, we just started going down to have an hour to ourselves, now she leaves me for dust.

“When she first started it, she was 56 minutes, now it’s down to 30 minutes. Kerry Wilson is one of the fastest runners. From day one she wanted to beat him, that’s her inspiration.”

Other Parkrunners congratulated Brianna as she smashed through her milestones with the group presenting her with a medal on 25th run and when she completed the half century of runs, they hailed their wee running star with a necklace which has a bee and a star on it, and a montage from some of her highlights.

Her mum can see her daughter go far, as she has a competitive nature and is running daft.

Angela would like to see more encouragement for young kids to get involved in the Parkrun and be inspired by Brianna’s success.

She said: “She’s been active since she was born. She’s a very competitive child in anything she does. She could be very successful in sport.

“But there’s nothing else in Girvan, nowhere else for her to run. There should be more locally it would be good for them to do more activities.”

Angela has seen young Brianna become part of the community, with the youngster going around congratulating everyone after ever run, and taking credit for her mum’s rising success.

She added: “Saturday was the first one I managed to run the whole thing. She was telling me that she helped me do it. She talks the whole way around if she stopped talking, she would probably be the fastest. She waves high fives to everybody and says well done to everyone as she’s doing it.”

Organiser Moria McDowall one of the founding members of the Girvan Parkrun said:

“She’s there every single week, whether its rain, or even hail. She’s so motivated and so driven, and she inspires everybody that’s there.

“It’s a long way, its three miles, when she first came it wasn’t an easy start, but her determination is incredible.”
