AN AYR family are worried they will become stranded in Spain after the country was locked down last week due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Michelle Thomson is currently in the popular resort of Benalmádena, on the Costa Del Sol with her husband Jordan and four young girls Makenzi, nine, Kaila, seven, Jordanna, three, and one-year-old Laelynn.

But their first big holiday as a family has turned into a nightmare and they now face an anxious wait to see if they can return home on Thursday.

They arrived for a week full of activities and enjoying the sun soaked beach last Thursday, March 12 but by Saturday were ordered back to the hotel by Spanish police as coronavirus deaths rocketed and the country was placed on a two week state of emergency.

The family were out on a day trip to the zoo when they were told it was closing, the beaches were to be emptied that country was going to be on lock down.

Yesterday (Monday) deaths hit 554 in Spain, with 9,181 confirmed cases in the country. As the numbers spiked over the weekend, it led to a prompt response from officials in Madrid.

In the region of Andalucia where Benalmádena is situated, cases have soared to 309 , with seven deaths.

Michelle told the Advertiser: “On Saturday we were out for the day and taking the kids to the zoo to be told it was closed.

“Beaches were closed off and then all the playparks. We had to head back to the hotel and were told not to leave until instructed.

“It was a normal holiday up until then, we were able to walk around freely, we only arrived here in Thursday for our first holiday as a family.”

“The police were out on the streets when we were out on Saturday, they were stopping people from entering the beaches. There has been a police helicopter out making sure no one is on the beaches. There is also a car driving about telling people not to go outside it’s an emergency.”

The family are staying at the Hotel World Polynesia which includes an array of indoor activities for the kids, which has kept them occupied as their parents worry about what will come next.

And Michelle has hailed staff at the resort which also announced the closure of the pool and spa on Monday.

Now the family are worried they may not be able to get back home on the scheduled date, with their Ryanair flight due from Malaga on Thursday.

Michelle added: “It’s a real worry. The worst thing is not knowing. We know how quickly things can change. Luckily the hotel has a few things for the kids to do despite some of it being closed.

“The staff have been amazing.”
