A TEAM of neonatal nurses are taking part in Glasgow Kiltwalk 2020 to raise money for Crosshouse Children’s Fund (CFF).

And even though the big event has been postponed until later in the year because of coronavirus, they have urged supporters to continue to donate as much as possible ahead of the Kiltwalk’s fundraising top-up deadline of March 31.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staff do a fantastic job of looking after Ayrshire’s sickest babies,.

Joanne Love from Irvine, Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, NHS Ayrshire & Arran, said: “We are proud to be neonatal nurses and midwives, and want to raise money to help give the babies and their families the little extras that can help to make a traumatic, unexpected journey as comfortable as possible.

“Many parents who have had babies in our unit have raised money in various ways for the unit over the years, so this is our team’s way to give back to the babies that have been in our care and their families.”

The money will be used for arranging arts and crafts events for parents and holding tea parties for parents to give them a chance to get together and socialise. Funds will offer families respite within the unit.

Fifteen neonatal nurses and midwives will tackle the 15-mile ‘Big Stroll’ which takes off from Glasgow Green. The nurses are feeling confident about the trek ahead.

Kirsty Gorry from Prestwick, Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, NHS Ayrshire & Arran, said: “It’s nice that the parents and families always raise money for us and now we’re finally able to give back to the unit and to the charity. They do such good work.

“Some of us have been preparing by meeting up and going out for walks so hopefully it will be fine! It will be a fun day for a great cause.”

Amy Aitken, Fundraising Manager, Crosshouse Children’s Fund said: “Staff at the Ayrshire Maternity Neonatal Units work tirelessly caring for Ayrshire’s tiniest and most vulnerable babies.

“We are very proud and thankful to have the team from NICU fundraising with us, and would encourage anyone with special connections to these units to consider supporting the team’s incredible fundraising efforts so far.”
