Members OF Ayr Roads/Harry Fairbairn Cycling Club are busy completing a history of the organisation ahead of its 90th anniversary in November

But they are keen to ensure that historical material covering other Ayrshire Cycling Clubs is not lost – particularly in Cumnock.

Arnold Thomson, of Ayr Roads, is appealing for more information on such clubs as The Cumnock Ramblers and the Affleck Wheelers.

He said: “I am bringing the history of the clubs together for Ayr Roads’ 90th anniversary. Cumnock played an important part in the club’s history.

“It’s a big occasion for the club and its members are trying to get recognition for the various successes the clubs had in the past including being Ayrshire, Scottish, British and indeed world champions.

“It’s an important document and includes the background, founding members and photos rom the editor of Muirkirk’s local newspaper and old Cumnock rally catalogues.”

The club is particularly keen to find out when the Cumnock Rally started and finished. The Rally was held at Woodrow Park for many years.

Arnold said: “The Cumnock Rally is a piece of cycling history but ceased to exist at some point. It would be good to get feedback from members of past clubs. There are folk out there with medals that go back a long way so anything on that would be useful.”

Although Ayr Roads’ celebratory events have been postponed due to COVID-19, the team are determined to make up for it by marking the club’s 90th anniversary in style, including an exhibition and special 90th anniversary club jerseys.
