Wedding bells will ring out for one happy Kilwinning couple after they finally agreed to get married.

Kilwinning councillor Donald Reid, 49, and community councillor Jackie Hamilton, 53, announced the happy news of their engagement last week.

Cllr Reid said: “We’re quite happy – she said yes.

“She turned me down so many times I got fed up asking her, then eventually she showed me pictures of rings.”

Jackie added: “Well it wasn’t actually that I turned him down, what I turned down was what he was wanting to do.

“He was saying ‘let’s get married and we’ll go up to Nardini’s for a fish tea’ as our wedding – but our first date was actually there so I could see why he wanted that.”

“We’ve been together for a while we’ve talked about it back and forward, but yes we’re very happy.

“I was the chair of the parent council at Kilwinning Academy and Donald had got involved in a lot of the fundraising. He arranged the first fireworks, we had asked if there could be a display involved with the schools and we first met through that.

“If you speak to anybody they’ll say all we do is argue and bicker with one another with various community things and how we were going to do them.

“It will be probably next year. The year after that we have got a council election and it has to fit in with Picnic in the Park, fireworks gala days and all the stuff Donald does. but we need to find the optimum date.

Cllr Reid added: “We’re not in any hurry. The time will come.”
