TEACHERS across North Ayrshire have submitted estimated grades for their pupils to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

Following the cancellation of SQA exams in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers have had to use their professional judgement based on assessment evidence, homework, coursework, classwork, prelim results and the progress pupils have made during the year to submit estimated grades.

The grades submitted by schools will be the significant factor in determining the most likely grade a student would have achieved if exams had gone ahead.

Under normal circumstances, the exam candidate’s estimated grade was based on their performance in all aspects of the course and reflected the candidate’s demonstration of the required skills, knowledge and understanding for the band estimated.

To make the process fair for everyone, teachers submitted their estimated grades on Friday, May 29, to allow for further detailed analysis.

Councillor John Bell, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Employment, said: “We fully understand that this is an uncertain time for our young people who have all worked hard throughout the year, and are worried about what the current situation means for them and their future.

“During this exceptional time, we as a council are fully committed to ensuring our pupils are awarded a fair grade which reflects the work they have put in during the course of the year.

“Our priority is to help our young people move onto the next stage of their learning, including going into employment, starting university, college courses, or an apprenticeship in the autumn.”

Exam results are due to be issued on August 4.
