A HISTORY group hope to move a recently-revealed memorial to Irvine’s witch trial victims closer to the town centre so more people can see the plaque.

The memorial to all the Irvine women tortured and killed accused of witchcraft was revealed – after its creator tried to trace her artwork years later.

We reported how Angie Taylor was excited to find her work still in use at Towerlands Community Centre – after wondering what became of the plaque she made for Irvine Development Corporation as a student.

She added: “They didn’t even ask me to provide any written explanation about the artwork so I suppose there’s a good chance if people have seen it they didn’t know what it was about.”

Now the Old Irvine history group says it will request North Ayrshire Council consider a more central location in town.

Glenn Kerr said: “Old Irvine was delighted to hear from artist Angie Taylor - we’ll be contacting the council to request that the plaque perhaps be moved to a more central location in the town.”

Irvine’s MSP previously raised the women’s plight in the Scottish Parliament after residents campaigned for a memorial in town.
