Hundreds of local schoolchildren descended on Dumfries House estate for an engineering and science challenge in which a group from Sorn Primary School won the Pupils’ Choice Award and also gained a prize for best garden design back in 2016.

As part of a competition entitled The Full Cycle – The Science of Plants, pupils from more than 10 Ayrshire schools were tasked with producing a model garden layout demonstrating nature’s cycles, such as the seasons and the water cycle.

Councillor Stephanie Primrose, East Ayrshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Skills and Learning said: “Well done to Sorn for a great result.

“Their work was excellent and shows us how much we can learn about nature and science from something as simple as our own gardens.

“Dumfries House and surroundings is also a brilliant location for young people to gain inspiration and I look forward to seeing how the workshops translate into lessons in the classroom.”
