An IRVINE teenager is getting set to shave off her waist-length hair to raise funds for a cancer charity in memory of her grandparents.

Micheala Ferguson, 14, will be getting her long hair shaved to a skinhead this week, hoping to raise a grand sum of£1,000 for Cancer Research UK.

And the selfless Irvine Royal Academy pupil is already halfway to hitting her target for the shave – which they will broadcast live on Facebook at 3pm on July 4.

Michaela decided to do the fundraiser in memory of both her grandparents who suffered from cancer and remembers how devastating it felt when they passed away.

After growing her long hair over a few years, Michaela and her mum Michelle agreed now was as good a time as any.

Proud mum Michelle told the Times: “Both Michaela’s grandparents were diagnosed with cancer and both passed away about four years ago.

“Ever since then she’s always said she really fancies doing that to help funding for Cancer Research, but she was a bit young then but asked me every year.

“This year the way things were I thought we’ll get it done.

“Although it happened at a young age she did experience a lot of the negativity and emotion that comes with it. So ever since then she has just basically wanted to do something that will help.

“We’ve raised nearly £500 so far. We’re doing it on July 4 at 3pm. I’m really proud of what she’s doing, it’s not an easy thing for a 14-year-old to do. She’s going to be completely shaving it off.”
