A DALRY 12-year-old came top in the UK in a virtual international shot put competition.

Jessie Caig, who is a member of Victoria Park City of Glasgow Athletics Club, threw a personal best of 11m 10cm to claim the first place among under-13 British athletes and third place overall.

Jessie was competing against others from all over the world including from as far away as South Africa.

Proud mum Nicola, who also coaches her daughter, said: “Jessies is an outgoing kid, she just loves taking part.

“I’m absolutely so proud.”

Jessie specialises in multi-events athletics and triumphed earlier this year when she won a gold medal for the shot put at the Scottish National Indoor Champs at the Emirates Stadium in February.

Jessie is already ranked first in the UK athletics rankings for shot put and is also the current Scottish champion.

She also took second place for a Scottish athlete in the Scottish National Indoor 60m final back in February.

She has kept up her training receiving guidance from her mum and coaches through video links and zoom classes.

With athletics tracks being closed, like many other athletes she has had to learn to adapt her training using local parks and running in the streets.

And she managed to find a good spot for shot put practice in Dalry Park, which is where Jessie videoed her entry for the Valhalla International Virtual Shot Put Competition last weekend.

Nicola, who is a qualified athletics coach, said her daughter is dedicated and showed promise from a young age, surpassing the level of coaching she could offer.

She said: “We went to Canada last year on holiday, and entered into the Ontario Provincial Games, where she made the 100m final and broke the state shot put record and took the state title.”

Lockdown has had its highs and lows, but has meant Jessie can train during the day.

Nicola said: “Her coaches have been amazing, without virtual coaching it would have been so much harder.”
