MP Allan Dorans met Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a fight over justice for a murdered police woman.

The Ayr Carrick and Cumnock MP was working as a police sergeant in London’s west end when Yvonne Fletcher was shot in the city on April 17, 1984.

The 25-year-old was gunned down outside the Libyan Embassy. No-one was ever charged.

Mr Dorans met with the Prime Minister on July 21 to ask for the criminal investigation to be re-opened.

Describing the reaction to her death, Mr Dorans said: “We were devastated. It sent shockwaves through the police and through the country.”

The SNP politician was asked to get involved by his friend, former metropolitan police officer John Murray. Mr Murray, from the Aberdeen area, was standing next to Yvonne when she was shot.

He has been campaigning for a prosecution for 36 years.

Mr Dorans said: “I am delighted to use my position as an MP to help John Murray bring to justice the people responsible for the death of Yvonne Fletcher.”

It is hoped previously withheld files could be made public – to help reveal what happened.

Mr Dorans asked for the Prime Minister to reopen the criminal inquiry in the House of Commons recently.

Mr Johnson described the murder as “sickening and cowardly.”

He replied: “The best thing I can say to the hon. Gentleman today is that I would welcome the opportunity to talk to him in person about the issue he has raised, and see what we can do to take the matter forward.”

Yvonne was policing a student protest at the Libyan Embassy against the regime of Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi.

At automatic weapon was fired at the protestors from a window in the embassy. Yvonne was shot in the back and she died shortly afterwards at Westminster Hospital.

Saleh Ibrahim Mabrouk – was arrested in connection with the killing in 2015 but the case was dropped later. He denied any involvement.

Mr Murray has launched civil proceedings against him to help uncover the truth.
