A hero Irvine cop who suffered critical injuries in the Glasgow hotel stabbing has reached the finals for a national bravery award.  

PC David Whyte was among six injured when a man attacked three fellow asylum seekers and two hotel staff at the Park Inn Hotel.

The assailant was shot dead by police.

After his bravery on duty, PC Whyte was saved from death by staff at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

PC Whyte reached the selection stage out of about 50 nominations in the Act Of Courage category of Brave Britons 2020 chosen by the public from around the UK.

Four finalists will be selected in each category and the winner will be announced in October, with Falklands War hero Simon Weston chairing the judging panel.

PC Constable David Whyte thanked the medical staff at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for their "outstanding" care.
