IRVINE’S Maritime Museum has now been named among Tripadvisor’s top 10 per cent of locations worth visiting across the world.

The Harbourside-based national maritime heritage hub has now been named a 2020 Travellers’ Choice Winner in Tripadvisor’s annual awards, putting the national maritime heritage collection into the top 10 per cent of worldwide attractions listed on the website.

Each year Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel platform which helps 463 million travellers each month, combs through reviews, ratings and saves from travellers everywhere to ‘award the very best’.

The Scottish Maritime Museum has been named a 2020 Travellers’ Choice Winner for both sites, the former Victorian shipyard building, the Linthouse, on

Irvine Harbourside and the Denny Tank on the site of the former William Denny Shipyard in Dumbarton.

Director David Mann said: “Our focus is always on continuing to develop the Museum, adding to our collection and finding innovative and exciting ways in which to tell the human stories behind our maritime heritage.

“We are over the moon to become a 2020 Travellers’ Choice Winner because it is a direct reflection of what our visitors think about the quality of their experience and how much they engaged with and enjoyed visiting our museums.”

The museum, which recently reopened its doors after lockdown, secured the accolade after previously achieving international notoriety when it announced it would give ships gender neutral descriptions following vandalism of its signs.

We reported in April last year how boats would no longer be referred to as she or her at the Museum.

It prompted Admiral Lord West to phone BBC Radio 4’s Today programme calling it ‘political correctness gone mad’.
