Irvine’s only public toilets in the town centre will remain shut after Irvine’s Portal swimming pools are set to reopen this week.

The Portal Swimming Pool in Irvine and Auchenharvie Leisure Centre Swimming Pool both reopened on Monday, September 14 with the Vikingar! Swimming Pool up in Largs to reopen on Saturday, September 19.

No date is yet set for the Garnock campus pool, with KA leisure bosses saying they are working on finalising arrangements with NAC.

A KA Leisure spokesperson said: “We are pleased to let you know that we have been busy preparing our swimming pools for a safe return and can now provide a schedule of re-opening dates and information on available aquatic activities.

“Please note that further information regarding swimming lessons will follow shortly.”

Leisure bosses previously confirmed gym facilities would reopen across North Ayrshire following the COVID-19 closure, with the council also announcing the reopening of the Portal’s cafe from this week,

However, North Ayrshire Council confirmed that public toilet facilities would remain closed to members of the public – but with facilities available for users of the cafe.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie, Cabinet Member for Green New Deal and Sustainability, said: “We’re pleased to be in a position to re-open Savour Café at the Portal.

“It’s great that residents will be able to pop in for a coffee again, and centre users can grab a snack after exercise.

“However, we can’t stress enough how important it is that people continue to follow national guidance in relation to safety and hygiene when visiting the café to stop the virus from spreading.”
