THE BATTLE of Britain was remembered last week with a service in Prestwick.
With the annual service cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic a small group of RAFA and Air Training Corps paid tribute to heroes at Prestwick War Memorial on Sunday, September 20.
There they honoured those who served in the battle over the skies of the UK in the Second World War.
An Ayrshire RAF pilot who was killed during a massive air attack on Sunday, August 11 1940 was remembered.
Sergeant R.B Sim was from Kilmarnock and was 23 when he lost life during air combat over Margate.
The members heard how the young pilot had no known grave and was one of 30 RAF Pilots who lost their lives during the attack.
Wreaths were laid at the Memorial and a silent prayer and silence was observed.
John Higgins, parades convenor, Royal Air Forces Association , Ayr and Prestwick Branch said: "In friendship and in service one to another, we are pledged to keep alive the memory of those of all nations who died in the Royal Air Force and in the Air Forces of the Commonwealth.
“In their name we give ourselves to this noble cause. Proudly and thankfully we will remember them."
