A fault on the line near Glengarnock caused major disruption on the railway between Ayr and Glasgow.

Services to the city from before 8am this morning were cancelled due to a signalling fault.

Network Rail workers have had to install nearly a mile of new signalling cable in the Glengarnock area.

There is still minor disruption as services have resumed through Glengarnock at around 10.30am.

Network Rail confirmed that the fault had not been due to cable theft, which has been a rising issue recently.

A Scotrail spokesperon told passengers that they could only run trains between Ayr/Largs and Kilwinning, and between Paisley Gilmour Street and Glasgow.

Four replacement buses were dispatched to Kilwinning station between 8am and 8.15am.
