We have to accept the new normal, says Talbot boss

It comes as the start-date for the new West of Scotland Football League is expected to be pushed back until October 31 due to a rise in coronavirus cases in the region.

Despite the setback, Talbot continued their preparation ahead of the season with recent friendlies against Annbank and Irvine Meadow.

During those games clubs have had to follow strict COVID-19 guidance with players expected to turn up and go home in the same kit and are not allowed to use changing room facilities, including showers, while fans are not allowed to attend.

The Talbot gaffer admits the restrictions are not ideal but believes there is no alternative.

He said: “The guidance is obviously not great. If the weather is the way it is normally in Scotland then it’s going to be tough to continue to do that.

“With no changing facilities allowed are we going to have to send people home in cars if they are dirty? Some players live more than an hour away so it is tough for them.

“If we want football back then we just have to accept it. I’ll be happy to start with whatever guidelines they set.

“When they say we can start, we will be ready. There is no point in moaning about it because that will not get us anywhere.”

With league chiefs admitting it is unlikely fans will be able to attend the opening fixtures, Sloan, admits that would be a big blow to clubs.

He said: “It’s going to be difficult for clubs like ourselves to run without fans and it’s not the same without them in the matches we have played so far – we miss them. Fans are so important in every sport but especially in football so of course we want them back in.

“It’s disappointing the start-date for the league is being pushed back but it’s not surprising given the situation. What we don’t want is to start then stop again which would be farcical so I would rather wait and then we can get going.

“Everyone at the club is keen to get started but it has to be done safely.”
