Ardrossan Winton Rovers boss Stevie Wilson says it is the fans he feels sorry for as his side continue their pre-season preparation ahead of the new West of Scotland Football League.

Winton will play in Conference C of the new set-up but uncertainty surrounds how viable it will be to play without fans if they are not allowed into grounds.

Wilson believes it’s the older generation that will suffer the most.

He said: “I feel sorry for the supporters. I have had several phoning me asking when they can get back in to watch.

“We have a lot of fans who are in the older generation and all they want to do is go out for a couple of hours on a Saturday and watch football.

“They are not wanting to go out for a bevvy or to cause a riot they just want to be in the fresh air and watch a game so we need to get them back.

“We are not going to function without them – how are we going to pay players. We need the income that they generate or clubs won’t survive.

“We as a club used to take buses to our away fixtures but we cannot do that anymore. We have committee members and volunteers in their 70s who love the club that want to help and love their jobs, but they are getting wound up by the whole situation and are worried about travelling themselves and we don’t have any local games in the league.

“Other clubs will be in a similar situation.

“That’s why I suggested we should have local leagues which may have been better this season to avoid local lockdowns.

“From the players perspective we have boys that are travelling from Glasgow three times a week not being paid and are even knocking back work to come down but it will get to a point where they might step away from football so there is a lot to be considered and whatever happens it is not going to be plain sailing.”
