Ayr United boss Mark Kerr believes his team were ‘excellent at times’ during their 2-1 defeat away to Premiership side Hamilton in the Betfred Cup.

The Honest Men started the brighter of the two teams, but it was the home side who opened the scoring thanks to Marios Ogkmpoe who netted from close range after 19 minutes.

United pressed for an equaliser and created several good chances but in the 35th minute they were punished as Hamilton doubled their lead courtesy of Charlie Trafford.

Michael Moffat pulled a goal back for the visitors after 67 minutes, but it wasn’t enough for the Honest Men as Hamilton held on for all three-points.

United are second in their league cup group behind leaders Annan Athletic who they face at Somerset Park on Tuesday (October 13).

Mark Kerr said: “It was a big game for us playing against a Premiership side but we came with our shape and I thought we really imposed that on them early on. We had some really good chances and I thought we were excellent at times. I don’t like getting beat but we did not get outplayed – we were more than a match for Hamilton.”
