The Loch Doon Ranger is encouraging locals to report mess after the discovery of rubbish believed to have been left by wild campers at the site last week.

Alan McDowall works non-stop to act upon reported incidents which range from abandoned picnics to household items.

Local man Alan Beck contacted the Ranger last week after coming across mounts of rubbish discarded at Carrick Forest Drive connecting Loch Doon and Stinchar Bridge.

Alan said: “I simply couldn’t believe what we saw. I can’t understand people that go camping to a lovely spot and just trash the place and destroy it for everyone else.

“The Loch Doon Ranger did a fantastic job, he should be credited for this. I’ve always thought Loch Doon is like a wee escape to the Highlands but alas it’s getting not to be like that anymore.”

The Ranger said: “Wild camping and rubbish left is a lot better than it was. When lockdown got eased, it was unbelievable, with an excess of 80 odd tents at the weekends. It was absolutely mobbed.

“Obviously the weather has curtailed that now because it’s much colder.

“It’s helpful for people to put stuff on social media because it’s only me up there but I can’t cover every nook and cranny. It’s great they post it because it means I can get it cleared up.”

The Ranger’s assistance was also called upon last week by local Lawrie Hainey who spotted the remnants of a BBQ at the head of the Loch. Again, the site was soon spick and span thanks to Alan.
