Dalmellington Primary School and the ECC Parent Council are organising a special event ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

The Stepping Stone Challenge gives local kids a chance to decorate stones which they will then place at the local war memorials in Benwhat and Dalmellington.

A quarter of all raised funds will be donated to Poppy Scotland, with the rest going towards school activities such as outdoor PE wear.

A parent council representative explained: “It was part of a home learning activity for the kids to do during the October holidays.

“The school is actively involved too because they’ll be taking groups of kids up to the local war memorial at Dalmellington.

“It’s probably about a six and a half mile walk from Dalmellington to the memorial and back again so in case kids don’t want to go or it’s too far, smaller groups will go up to the Dalmellington memorial to take up their stones.

“We received funding for outdoor clothing for the P1-P4s as due to COVID regulations, we’re still not allowed to do indoor exercise.

“Coming into winter, there were concern that kids wouldn’t be adequately dressed to go outside so the school is trying to raise funds to ensure every pupil has outdoor gear such as a cagoule and wellies.

“We’re now looking for the funding for our Primary 5-Primary 7s as they’re the only age group not to get the funding from elsewhere.”

Dalmellington PS said: “The school received an award last year from the Chief Lord Lieutenant for our whole school project work for the Centenary.

“To carry on this work and because we are unable to place a wreath and have children attend a Remembrance Event, we are marking Remembrance through a Home Learning Project.

“Families have been asked to decorate stones to place at Dalmellington and Benwhat War Memorial. During the school day the school will take children in small groups to Dalmellington war memorial to place the stones.

“The Parent Council have organised the Stepping Stone Challenge which they are promoting to encourage families to walk to Benwhat in their own time.”

The Doon Valley walkers are also completing a hike to the same commemorative sites on November 7 and 8, organised by Jim Murphy.

The group is working with local Scouts and nursing homes who will also create commemorative artwork which the Doon Valley walkers will lay in their name.
