Dreghorn residents created a stunning poppy display to help remember the fallen safely amid the pandemic.

Poppies were hung up on the gates of Dreghorn and Springside Parish Church with a selection of painted rocks in support of armed forces veterans and the annual poppy appeal during COVID-19 difficulties.

Irvine Times:

The project was first started by a Greenwood Academy pupil to raise some community spirit ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Alison Goody from the church told the Times: “The Sunday school wanted to get the community active and to remember together even though the church is closed due to the pandemic restrictions. The church is usually full with the congregation, the Sunday school, Boys Brigade, Guides and Brownies on Remembrance Sunday but this year we have to remember differently and safely.

“The display enabled us to remember together as a community but from a distance. Rachel who is in fourth year at Greenwood Academy started the display in an effort to raise community spirit but also to reflect and remember our war veterans.

Irvine Times:

“We have been overwhelmed by the response and the many members to have had a wander to see the display – it is a time for young and old to come together.

“COVID-19 has impacted everyone and as a church we want to show the community we are still here.”
