A Watch Commander stationed at New Cumnock Fire Station has been recognised for his outstanding commitment to the service after four decades in the job.

WC Angus (Gus) Hart, 58, completed 40 years’ service with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on November 1 – an achievement which his colleagues and the local community were keen to celebrate.

On Wednesday, surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, LSO Ian McMeekin presented Gus with a certificate to mark the milestone moment in his career.

Gus said his time at the station has come with “bad bits and good bits” but that reaching 40 years’ service is “an achievement in itself”.

Gus said: “It was a bit of a surprise but I knew they did stuff for people who completed that length of service. It was nice to get the certificate. The full crew was there, although it was an unusual occasion because of COVID.

“I started out at the station and I’ve always been in New Cumnock. I’m New Cumnock born and bred. It’s had its highs and lows but I’ve met a lot of firefighters who have had a lot of influence on me. They’re very good people.

“I can’t say a bad word about my officers. They’re all good at what they do.

“I’ve been going through the old books and it brings back memories. Most of the crew who started with me have sadly passed away. I’m the youngest of an old bunch.”

Gus said the toughest challenge he has faced in his role as WC was dealing with the flooding that hit New Cumnock in 2014 and 2016.

He continued: “I attended the flooding and it was bad to see the amount of houses that were destroyed. The full town got flooded and we were out from 5am with pumps. It was sad to see people’s belongings floating about.

“I’ve enjoyed serving the people of New Cumnock. I like seeing folk happy and making sure everything goes alright. The only downfall is when something tragic happens. It’s not very nice, but you need to get up and keep marching on. That’s what we’re there for.

“People see the big red engine and think we’re supermen. We’re not, we’re just human.”

Area Commander Ian McMeekin said: “Gus, joined the team at New Cumnock Community Fire Station when he was 18 years old and has now committed 40 years of his life to his local community.

“Gus became the Watch Commander in charge of the station in 2007 and throughout his career he has always

gone above and beyond to forge relationships with partner organisations and local residents to protect those most at risk.

“I would like to thank Gus and his family for their commitment over the past 40 years, and I am honoured to recognise his 40 years of dedicated service to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”
