A NEW Cumnock woman is raising funds to build a special cabin for abused and neglected dogs who need greater care before moving on to their forever home.

Jean Pollock started the fundraising page with all money going towards building The Little Cabin – a dog shelter which will cater for pets who have suffered severe mistreatment.

She hopes the non-profit fundraising project can transform the lives of many ‘underdogs’ or dogs who would otherwise not had have a chance in life due to their size, background or temperament.

Jean said: “We’ve already had more than £1,000 in donations through our Facebook group but we need to raise a bit more to make sure the cabin is properly insulated. These are harder placement dogs which some rescue shelters struggle with because they’re fearful and so people don’t know how to handle them.

“A lot of time there’s no placement for them because people don’t have the right foster experience, but I do.”

Jean works with dogs ranging from foreign to UK breeds, and says that The Little Cabin would provide each one with the training and respite they need.

She continued: “I’ve worked mostly with Romanian rescue dogs who’ve been abused and neglected. I have five of my own dogs, some of whom started out as foster or long term dogs and others who started off in a shelter.

“They’ve now reached a stage where they’re institutionalised. I’ve taken them in, helped them adapt to the wider world and set them up for the adoption stage.

“Some people aren’t confident taking on large breeds, and some are at imminent danger of being put to sleep. That’s where I swing into action.

“Any dog that fits the criteria of being an emergency or underdog would be taken in.

“I used to work in admin in rescue. I’ve worked with the most severe cases but I’m at capacity in my home so I need this separate safe space to work with the dogs individually. I’ll then look at expanding and adding an enrichment area.”
