THE youngsters of Irvine Vics 2009 have walked over a million steps, smashing the target set by their coaches.

Team coaches Billy Gilmour and Mark McGowan set them a challenge of walking the 128,263 steps it would take to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Each player had to count their 6108 steps a day as well as do exercises in the house.

And they all roped in their family members to help them, posting pictures on a WhatsApp group every day.

In total, they took 1,379,888 beating their target and as lockdown continues, the players have been set a new challenge to walk the equivalent of the West Highland Way.

They have until February 25 to walk 96 miles each, 8000 steps a day.

Coach Mark McGowan said: “They have done a brilliant job and it’s been great to see them get everyone in the family helping out.

“It was good to see them braving all the bad weather to get their steps up so we thought right, let’s keep them moving especially when we can’t train.”
