A FILM tribute to NHS workers and a critically acclaimed track by an emerging singer-songwriter are among the highlights of the UWS Winter Showcase.

Students from Arts and Media courses at the university, which are predominantly located in Ayr, will share the fruits of their creative labours at the free event, which takes place online on February 5.

The show will feature everything from hard-hitting documentaries to thought-provoking artwork, to short movies.

Among the exhibitors is Christie Oliver, a second year BA (Hons) Commercial Music student, whose original song – White Lies – has already created a buzz; earning airplay on both commercial and BBC radio stations.

Christie said: “White Lies is about uncertainty in relationships; the kind of uncertainty that can leave you going round in a circle and ending right back where you started.

“I’m really pleased at how positively it’s been received, and it’s quite surreal to hear it getting played on the radio.

“A whole new audience will get to experience it as part of the Winter Showcase and I’m really excited to find out

what they think of my work.

“I’m also excited to seeing and hearing what other students have been up to.”

BA (Hons) Performance student Samantha Toyer-Wright’s short film 999 is also part of the showcase.

It tells the dramatic story of an Emergency Call Centre at winter, as a call-handler attempts to help a woman who has just given birth.

She said: “My sister is a paramedic and my brother is a student nurse, so I’ve heard first-hand accounts about how difficult the pandemic has been for NHS workers.

“The film tells a story, while also paying tribute to the work NHS staff do all year round. I’m excited that it will be part of the showcase and that more people will be able to watch it.”

UWS Lecturer and Arts and Media Showcase Co-ordinator Clare Duffin added: “The Winter Showcase is an interim celebration of work by our talented creative industries students.

“We are hopeful that it will give our students a sense of achievement, and show visitors that they are capable of producing incredible work under even the most challenging of circumstances.”
