CAPTAIN Sir Tom Moore has gifted Ayrshire Cancer Support £45,000 in his legacy fund.

The inspirational captain raised £33 million for the NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Appeal by walking up and down his garden, capturing the hearts of the nation who wanted to support his fundraising effort.

And Ayrshire Cancer Support was one of the charities chosen to benefit from Sir Tom’s legacy fund.

Now, the charity wants to celebrate Sir Tom’s efforts by asking people to follow in Sir Tom’s footsteps and take part in Walking In Hope, in his memory.

Laura Brown, of Ayrshire Cancer Support said: “We are thrilled and honoured that the fruits of Sir Tom Moore’s labour will directly support Ayrshire people affected by cancer, what a wonderful legacy he leaves behind.

“We want to honour this and follow in his footsteps by asking people to help us honour Sir Tom Moore’s efforts by holding their very own Walk of Hope.

“These walks show that we are walking in hope and solidarity with those who are going through cancer treatment, living with cancer or in memory of someone special who you have lost to the disease.

“The name of the person you are walking for will be inscribed on a beautiful tag and hung from our Hope and Memory tree at our drop-in centre.”

Ellie Orton, Chief Executive for NHS Charities Together, said: “Captain Sir Tom inspired so many people to take on their own extraordinary challenges, from running marathons to swimming lakes, and he gave us all hope.

“He showed NHS patients and staff who were struggling that people cared, that they were looking out for them and doing what they could to support them.”

If you would like to host a Walk of Hope, you can choose to walk from eight miles to 60 miles, on your own or with a group and walk your way to support the charity and pay your own tribute to Sir Tom.
