THE latest addition to McGavin Park looks set to receive the royal seal of approval by this year’s Segdoune Queen.

Kilwinning councillor Donald Reid couldn’t resist the carriage style picnic bench when he was looking at new pieces for the park.

And he admits he had the Segdoune Queen in mind when he ordered the carriage along with truck and tractor benches for the Dalry Road park.

“For three years we have been working hard as a group to encourage people to use the park,” said Cllr Reid.

“It’s great to come out and see people using the outdoor gym to keep fit then look across and see youngsters on the zip slide, especially during these difficult times.

“When I was looking at new equipment I spotted the carriage in the Ogilvlie’s catalogue and knew it would become an instant selfie attraction for people visiting the park.”

McGavin Park has become the venue in the town for events including the firework display and the popular Picnic In The Park where families are encouraged to go along and enjoy some amusement rides and entertainment.

And Donald is hopeful this will go ahead in August.

He said: “We were so sorry that we couldn’t host it last year but we are confident that with the correct safety and socially distanced measures in place, Picnic In The Park will take place here.

“We are considering hosting a crowning this year for the Segdoune Queen but we are still working on that. It would be great to see the royal party pictured at the carriage bench.

“We will also be putting in another bench in the park to make sure there are plenty of seats for people who may be out walking or who are meeting up outside for the first time in months.

“It really is a lovely place to meet people you haven’t seen during lockdown. There’s plenty of space to stay socially distanced during your catch up.”

The busy councillor is at the park most days as he opens the toilets for visitors, if you pop along you’ll see him tending to the flower beds and picking up litter.
