Just over one year since the first coronavirus case was recorded in Scotland the most vulnerable in Ayrshire have now nearly all been vaccinated, health chiefs have confirmed.

The second dose vaccination programme for care home residents in the NHS Ayrshire and Arran area has been completed say the health board.

However, they added that a small number of people couldn't be vaccinated first time round because of their clinical status, and will be done as soon as their situation improves.

Earlier this month care homes began welcoming visitors indoors for the first time in almost a year and so news of the vaccine success story will allay many fears.

A spokesperson for NHS Ayrshire and Arran said: "The local COVID-19 vaccination programme is progressing well and has been hugely successful so far.

"We are vaccinating our population according to the prioritisation set out by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) nationally.

"Second dose vaccinations have now been completed for all care home residents in East, North and South Ayrshire, where clinically indicated.

"There are a small number of care home residents who could not receive their second dose who will be vaccinated as soon as their clinical status allows."

Nearly 40 per cent (1,809,158) of the adult population in Scotland has now received a first dose of the vaccine and 132,760 people have now had a second dose.
