Council bosses’ top legal beagle will step down from the job later in the year after first joining the local authority when it started in 1996.

Andrew Fraser, North Ayrshire’s head of democratic services is taking retirement in September after starting as the council’s principal legal officer.

Chief Executive Craig Hatton said: “Andrew is a stalwart of local government and indeed North Ayrshire Council. He is a public servant in the truest sense, having had a long and rewarding career in local government since 1983.

“He first joined North Ayrshire Council when it was formed in 1996, as Principal Legal Officer. After a period working at West Dunbartonshire Council, he then returned to North Ayrshire and became a well-respected part of our senior management team as the Head of Democratic Services – a position he has held since 2013.

“His contribution to the council during these years has been invaluable and we will be forever grateful to all that he has achieved.

“With a remit covering services such as legal and licensing, communications, policy and performance, civil contingencies and committee and member services, it is fair to say Andrew has had a well-rounded experience.

"He has also played a key role in all local and national elections and referendums during his time with the council. He is highly thought of and valued by his teams, senior managers, elected members as well as colleagues at a national level – particularly though his work as President of SOLAR (Society of Local Government Lawyers and Administrators in Scotland) and Director of Alcohol Focus Scotland.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Andrew and he will certainly leave behind a great legacy. We wish him the very best for his retirement.”
