THE most popular names in Ayrshire for the last year have been revealed. 

Across the region, Ella was the most popular name coming out on top in both South and East Ayrshire and in fifth in North Ayrshire. 

For the boys, parents in the council areas opted for Rory, James and Alfie. 

Isla has overtaken Olivia as the top name for baby girls in 2020.

And Jack remains the most popular boy’s name, according to the full lists of 2020 baby names published by National Records of Scotland (NRS) today, March 23.

The biggest increases in the top 100  boys' list were Roman, which jumped up 68 places to 33rd, and Finley, which rose 48 places to 88th.

Local stats: 

North Ayrshire

In North Ayrshire the most popular girl’s name was Freya with 16 babies being called this in 2020.

This was followed by Olivia, Emilia and Ava, Ella, Isla, Evie, Grace, Rosie and Harper.

Rory was the most popular boy’s name in North Ayrshire with the parents of nine babies choosing that name.

This was followed by Alexander, Lewis, Louie, Finlay, Jack, Noah, Brodie, Oliver and Blake.

East Ayrshire

In East Ayrshire Ella was the top choice of baby name for parents with 16 choosing this.

This was followed by Ava, Emily, Olivia, Hannah, Grace, Harper, Ellie, Mia and Jessica.

Alfie was the most popular boy’s name in East Ayrshire with 15 babies being given that name last year.

This was closely followed by Jack, Noah, Harris, Rory, Alexander, James, Carter, Lewis and Thomas.

South Ayrshire

In South Ayrshire Ella was the most popular choice of girl’s name with nine parents choosing this for their new bundle of joy.

This was followed by Emily, Ava, Aria, Amelia, Charlotte, Evie, Lily, Robyn and Layla.

James was the most popular choice for new born boys in South Ayrshire with seven being crowned that name last year.

This was followed by Lewis, Rory, Alexander, Oscar, Archie, Jacob, Brodie, Kai and Carter.

Julie Ramsay, Vital Events Statistician, said: "We can see from the 2020 names lists that different generations of parents have different preferences for naming their babies.

"Isla, the most popular name for girls in 2020, was the most popular name with mothers aged 35 and over, but it only ranked seventh with mothers aged under 25. However, Olivia, the most popular girls name of 2019, was ranked 1st by younger mothers and 6th by older mothers.

"Jack, the most popular name for boys in 2020, was the 2nd most popular name with mothers aged 35 and above, and only 17th with mothers aged under 25. James was the most popular name for boys with older mothers while Noah was ranked 1st for younger mothers.

"Popular culture often affects how people name their babies, the name Billie rose in popularity by 79 per cent in the past two years with 34 baby girls being given this name in 2020.

"In the same time, Google searches in the UK for Billie and Billie Eilish the singer having her first number one single in the UK in early 2020.

"Tommy, a name occurring in the popular TV shows Peaky Blinders and Love Island, has doubled in popularity in the last two years, with 148 boys being given this name."
