KILWINNING Sports Club was transformed into a location for an Amazon Prime show this week.

The club’s pitches were being filmed as part of Scottish show Cavendish, starring Kilbirnie actress Maddy Bryce.

Maddy wrote the show, set in a posh Scottish boarding school, in 2019 as a short film for her showreel.

After shooting an eight minute piece, it was suggested Maddy write more and during lockdown the decision was made to take the two short episodes and combine them for one episode. It was submitted to Amazon Prime and went live in January this year.

An instant success with teenager viewers, it has reached viewing figures of over 108,000.

Maddy said: “We needed a forested background with no other houses or outer buildings in shot. Our sports choreographer and former local footballer Rachel Halbert put us in contact with Colin Hunter at the club and he was a dream host.

“Location hunting isn’t always straightforward, but Colin said we could move nets and do what we needed to do to complete the scene.

“The major point was the pitch had to match drone shots on the opening sequence which puts Cavendish in the highlands.

“That is the kind of location we love to work with! It was also an honour to shoot in a lesser featured area of Scotland.

“It was worth waiting for the restrictions to be lifted to allow us to finish filming it and although we had to get used to keeping socially distanced, having the whole pitch was perfect.”

When Maddy created Cavendish, she wanted to write something that turned the tables on the typical featuring of Scottish characters.

She noticed that, especially in young adult or school themed stories, Scottish characters were either rarely present or there was one pupil from maybe Glasgow.

So she got to work and designed a show that was an anti-mean girl show.

“We don’t write drama between girls as is typically portrayed on screen,” said Maddy.

“There is tension and disagreements, but we don’t want the girls ripping each other apart so that is one thing you won’t see in our show..

“We’re also family friendly and focus on story telling so the language is PG while the themes are deep and thought-provoking. The cast and crew are all Scottish or Scottish-based from ages 19 up to 70. Some are professional in the industry, some students, some untrained and learning.

“I enjoy spending my time and money on Cavendish to develop the team and open doors for others. It has been a greater joy than the original plan of focusing my showreel.”
