Glenafton manager Mick McCann says he is looking for a mix of youth and experience in his side as they strengthen ahead of their first season in the West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL).

Mick McCann took over the reins in February with his first task in charge to build his squad up from scratch after the club took a year out from football due to COVID-19 restrictions.

He has added heavily to his squad, with recent signings including young midfielder Darren Curtis, former Auchinleck Talbot striker Sean Mcllroy and former Hurlford defender Ross Fisher.

The Glens also strengthened in between the sticks with the signing of two keepers, former Pollok shot stopper Scott Johnson and Daniel Sloan.

McCann said: “I know all about Sean’s history at Talbot and he also had a spell over in Australia, so he has great experience. We are looking for a good mix, so we have guys like Darren Curtis coming in at 20-years-old just starting off and guys like Sean who is 34, who will add other things to the team.

“I think the two goalkeepers will be challenging for the gloves, but they are still both young keepers.

“Scott is a bit more experienced at this level than Daniel, but we are glad to get both in and I am sure they will feed off each other.

McCann has also been hard at work organising a pre-season for his side. The WoSFL have proposed a start date of July 17, giving the Glens three months to get their squad completed and up to full fitness ahead of a frantic season in the extended Premier Division.

McCann says he plans to have his players back in at the end of this month to get prepared.

He added: “We are looking to start up again at the end of the month and I have sent the pre-season schedule to all the players.

“In terms of pre-season fixtures we are looking to stay local, so we are playing Kello Rovers, Girvan FC and Whitletts Victoria. The big away game we have planned is up against Dalbeattie Star, just to give the team a bit of a trip away.

“We are also looking to have a friendly game up against New Cumnock Amateurs and make that into a gala day.”
