Ayrshire's footgolfers got off to a flying start to life as a club – with a comfortable win over the reigning UK Champions.

The game earlier this month was the first the club, which is based in Kilmarnock but has players from North, South and East Ayrshire, had played, having only formed earlier this year.

And it saw the Ayrshire side winning against Kingdom of Fife – the club crowned the best in the UK at the National FootGolf Club League finals. A squad of 14 headed to the Fife club’s home course, near Kirkcaldy, last Sunday.

The tie saw Ayrshire Captain Rory Cassidy, of Ardrossan, and Vice-Captain Mik Boag returning to the club they’d helped to win the Scottish Club Cup last season.

Ayrshire reigned supreme, thanks to great performances from Cass, Port Glasgow player Dan Mains, Ayr man Jack Grigor, and newcomer Steven Glen, of Saltcoats.

Some tremendous performances saw Ayrshire storm into a 21-2 lead after the singles. Four eagles in his first 7 holes set Cass off on the road to an impressive -14 round which saw him net 5pts for Best Score on the day.

Dan Mains hit -10, earning 3pts, and Jack Grigor’s -8 brought a further 2pts, for second and third best scores. Newbie Steven’s -5 earned 5pts for Best Newcomer, while Saltcoats teen Ryan Boyce and Renfrewshire youngster Zack Boag claimed 1pt each for the best Under 16 and Under 12 scores.

Irvine woman Lizzie McCullagh’s round earned 2pts for Best Female. In the pairs, Cass and Dan raced into a 3-0 lead against Matt and Irvine after starting Eagle, Birdie, Birdie.

The Ayrshire boys won that tie 3-1 – and the resulting 10pts taking Ayrshire’s score for the day to 31. But Jack and Steven fell to Robert Page and Ian, giving KoF 10pts, and giving a final score of KoF 12 v 31 Ayrshire.

The win leaves them sitting second in the league on points difference, behind Glasgow FootGolf Club.

Next up for Ayrshire is a tough tie against Glasgow, at Footgolf Kilmarnock, later this month.
