Irvine’s old Harbourmaster’s Office will receive further funds to help bring the building back to life.

Improvement works totalling £100,000 were agreed for the Harbourside building as part of the council’s derelict land spending plans – with the building currently sitting in a sad state covered in vegetation growth.

Council chiefs hope the derelict building could eventually be offered up to the private sector for use as part of its grand harbour plans for Irvine.

The money will kick start initial works to protect the integrity of the existing council-owned C-listed building, making it both wind and watertight with service connections to support future development.

Funding of £50,000 was previously set aside last year for surveys, and works to improve the C-listed building and allow designs, planning consent and marketing with a view to securing private sector operator interest.

Irvine writer Mairi Craw, the late author of novels Beyond the Hedge and Between Two Worlds and daughter of former Harbourmaster Ralph Henderson, previously campaigned to see the building restored as a ‘vibrant part of the community’.
