A NEW scheme offering eight young people in North Ayrshire an intense employment bootcamp is up and running.

The joint project has been set up by Golphin and North Ayrshire Council’s Growing Beyond Tomorrow.

For the Golphin team, who work with young people using golf to teach about numeracy and literacy and confidence, it seemed like the perfect project to join.

Callum McPherson of Golphin was looking forward to signing up young people for the scheme.

He said: “We work closely with young people who learn more than just the sport of golf, they learn about numeracy, literacy and building self confidence too.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people who are unsure what direction to go in as they will have the chance to learn new skills over the six months that will set them off on the right path.

“It’s great to work with other agencies to be part of this project and the team at Golphin is looking forward to help the young people examine their choices, learn new skills and help them decide what future career path to choose.”

The young people can learn about careers in fashion and design, horticulture, engineering, construction, hospitality, sports and environmental and climate change.

Callum went on: “It’s going to be hard work for these young people but what a great opportunity to sign up and get paid to learn about a potential career?

“We can’t wait to get started and so far we have had a good response but we want to hear from more young people who may have left school or want to follow a new career path, the bootcamp will help them make that decision.”

On Monday Golphin’s Mairi McWilliams and Flynn Willemse visited Kirktonhall Glen in West Kilbride to look at potential scope for fitness programmes for young people and the wider community.
