Ayrshire and Arran could be set for floods later on today according to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), who have issued a warning for heavy downpours.

Heavy showers are expected to develop across the area this afternoon and evening.

The worst of the showers are expected to be in East Ayrshire, with downpours likely to cause disruption due to flooding from surface water and small watercourses.

A further spell of very wet weather is likely on Wednesday which may lead to flooding from larger rivers.

A SEPA spokesperson said: "Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.

"Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188."

The Met Office are also warning of potential thunderstorms to hit most of the country today. North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire look set to be out of the range of these, but again, East Ayrshire could be hit.

They warn of:

"Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Some communities might become cut off if roads flood.

"Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."
