An Irvine photographer took a tour inside Irvine's mostly abandoned Fullarton high flats which the council plans to gradually demolish.

Irvine and Kilwinning on Camera Club member John Low took a recent trip through some of the abondoned hallways - describing the atmosphere as a 'ghost town'.

Irvine Times:

Plans were validated this week which would see the five 14-story blocks torn down floor-by-floor through machinery and hand with asbestos needing to be removed safely - as well as the concierge building, and garages.

Irvine Times:

However the date and duration for the demolition work to kick off is yet to be confirmed.

Irvine Times:

Plans state heavy machinery will be used to progressively reduce the structure down in height, with lighter gear used once reduced to five-storeys in height.

Irvine Times:

We previously reported how works had been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic with the rehousing of residents continuing to run into 2021.

Irvine Times:

The planning statement adds: "Safety exclusion zones, delineated by Heras fencing, will be set up immediately surrounding all drop zones for demolition material.

Irvine Times:

"Prior to any demolition commencing all entrances to the works will be barricaded to prevent any unauthorised access. Regular inspections of the building will be carried out, again prior to actual machine demolition, to check for any unauthorised persons.

Irvine Times:

"All asbestos and any other hazardous materials shall be identified and removed from the site by appropriate methods. All salvageable materials will be stripped by hand or by an excavator working internally and set aside for re-cycling."
