Thieves in Irvine are targeting 'insecure vehicles' according to police in the area.

North Ayrshire Priority Policing Team have reported a number of thefts from cars in the Girdle Toll, Lawthorn, and Bourtreehill areas.

They say that owners should make the most of their vehicle's security features to make sure they don't become a victim.

They add that most vehicle crime is opportunistic and by taking the following measures it will reduce the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen from:

- Double check you've locked your car.
- If you have a car alarm, then make sure it’s set.
- Don’t leave any valuables in cars and if you must then ensure they are not within view.
- Always lock all house doors and windows.
– Keep your car keys out of sight and in a safe place. Don't leave them lying next to a door or window.

Constable Masson of the North Ayrshire Priority Policing Team said: “I would encourage everyone to be extra vigilant and to ensure that their car is locked and secure before leaving it unattended.

"Please make sure that all property such as bags, purses, Sat Navs and phones are not on display.”
