Football legends from Ardrossan and Belfast played in a charity football match last Sunday to raise money for mental health and a new wheelchair as part of their fundraising efforts.

The Butterfly Club Challenge Trophy football match saw Winton Rovers Legends face Belfast team Glentoran FC Legends at Winton’s ground.

The event, which ended in a 2-1 win for Glentoran, raised cash to split between two causes, The Butterfly Club and the Beautiful Inside & Out charity.

Persimmon Homes West Scotland, is the headline sponsor of the Butterfly Club Challenge Trophy football match. Thanks to generous funding from the Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions scheme, organisers were able to stage the event.

Derek Cook, on behalf of Persimmon Homes, told the Herald: “This year we are helping two causes; a young person who is in need of a new wheelchair power pack and the Beautiful Inside & Out charity, which provides assistance and support to those with mental health issues and also aids suicide prevention.

“We have raised over £8,700 with more to come in.”

The big event also saw live music and a youth tournament.

Derek said: “This is the fifth Year Glentoran have given their time to come help us raise money for our charities and it will be close on £50,000 raised over the five matches.

“It was an excellent game and Glentoran retained the trophy for the fifth Year.”

As well as Persimmon Homes, they would like to thank their Coast to Coast Travel, Ardrossan Winton Rovers committee, the band Little Miss Debbie and The G Men sponsored by The Ardrossan Music Experience, ball sponsors, Andrew and Joanne, mascot sponsor Paul Anderson, posters Alex Wilkie and Clyde Studios, bonus ball donations and special assistants Niko and Melina Haralambakis and Shirly Ann.

Thank you also went to all the generous donors, who contributed so much.

Derek, Graeme Hamilton and Steven Adams did a 54 mile cycle on the Saturday which brought in half of the total. People can donate at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/glenswintonlegends.
