More than 700,000 vaccine doses have been delivered in Ayrshire and Arran - one year on from the first ever Covid-19 vaccinations given by the health board.

A 'phenomenal' 718,974 vaccine doses have been delivered locally in the past year, including 302,888 first doses, 277,576 second doses, and 138,510 third/booster doses.

And twelve months on from the first vaccine dose being administered in the local authority area, those involved in the local programme are reflecting on its success.

Lynne McNiven, NHS Ayrshire & Arran Public Health Director, said: “Since December last year, vaccines have been given on the mainland and in our island communities in venues as diverse as sports centres, community halls, schools, music venues, football stadiums and even the local racecourse.

Irvine Times:

"Hundreds of people have been involved in delivering the vaccinations. That includes those normally employed in Ayrshire immunisation teams, alongside an army of additional healthcare professionals, including bank staff, dentists, GPs, military colleagues and retirees who have come back to work during the coronavirus pandemic.

“By the time you roll up your sleeve to have a Covid-19 vaccine, a host of other staff have helped to keep the programme running smoothly, including porters, domestic and janitorial staff, procurement staff, pharmacy teams, IT workers, administrative staff and teams who scope venues and ensure they meet all health and safety requirements."

She continued: "It is a whole team effort and I take my hat off to everyone who has helped us deliver Covid-19 vaccinations in the last year against the backdrop of the pandemic, and at times in very challenging circumstances. They have undoubtedly helped save local lives and have prevented many people from being hospitalised for severe coronavirus.

Irvine Times:

“My sincere thanks also go to every single member of the public who has stepped forward for vaccination.

"The vaccine is the best tool we have against the coronavirus and by getting the protection it offers, you are helping your community to limit the negative impacts of COVID-19, which can be serious at any age.

"Please keep coming for vaccine appointments when invited to do so."
