A COUPLE were robbed of their vehicle in Ayrshire last night - and were dragged along the street before the car was found on fire in Irvine.

The incident happened around 6.25pm on Wednesday, January 5 in Low Glencairn Street  in Kilmarnock, at the junctions of Maggie’s Bar and Kitchen and the Lidl supermarket.

Police say a man was walking in the area, intentionally damaging cars, and struck a blue Mazda 2 vehicle.

This resulted in the occupants getting into an altercation with the suspect who entered the car and drove off in it.

The victims attempted to stop the car being stolen, and were briefly dragged along the street, sustaining minor injuries.

At around 7pm that night, the car was found on fire in Tarryholme Drive, Irvine.

Police are now asking anyone who can help identify the man responsible to come forward.

He is described as white, between 20 and 30-years-old with a slim but muscular build, short hair and wearing a blue jumper.

It is believed he had previously been in the company of a woman in her 20s with a larger build.

Detective Inspector Andrea Templeton from Kilmarnock CID said: “Fortunately neither of the victims were seriously injured, but this was still a very frightening ordeal for them and it was made all the more distressing because of the theft of their vehicle.

“We are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to identify the suspect and would ask anyone who recognises him, or who witnessed this incident, to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, if your vehicle was in Lower Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock, or Tarryholme Drive, Irvine during the evening of Wednesday, January 5 and has dash-cam footage that may be able to assist with our investigation, then please also get in touch.”
