Two Irvine residents were bailed after allegedly shouting abuse and struggling with cops.

James Donnelly, 33, and Marie Friel, 24, appeared from custody after the pair were arrested in connection with a disturbance in Stevenston on January 24.

The couple, both of Livingston Terrace, Irvine, pleaded not guilty to charges of threatening or abusive behaviour with Mr Donnelly also denying a charge of resisting arrest.

Court papers allege Mr Donnelly shouted and swore at Ardeer Services, Townhead Street and then New Street in Stevenston.

It’s claimed he also stood in the middle of the road and made abusive gestures as well as threatening people with violence.

The complaint states he then struggled with police and attempted to make off from them when in New Street.

It’s alleged he struggled violently with the two officers and lashed out his arms then tensed his arms to prevent police from handcuffing him.

It’s claimed Ms Friel also caused fear and alarm during the incident by shouting and swearing in New Street.

The procurator fiscal’s complaint states both committed the alleged offences while on bail – granted at Glasgow Sheriff Court back in September 9 2020.

The couple, both represented by defence solicitor Peter Murray entered not guilty pleas to the charges on the complaint when they appeared on Tuesday [January 25].

Trial was set for June this year with an intermediary diet hearing in May with both receiving bail.
