Police in Ayrshire have issued a reminder to people in the area to watch out for impersonation scams after several pensioners were targeted by fraudsters pretending to be officers or bank clerks.

A number of incidents have been reported in recent weeks where people have been contacted by phone and by someone claiming to represent their bank, utility company, or police.

After establishing a rapport, they then attempt to persuade their potential victim to either attend their bank to withdraw cash or for cash they hold within their home to be placed within a sealed envelope and sent via post to various addresses in London, say police.

East Ayrshire Safer Communities Officer, PC McGarva, said: “Criminals are targeting people through various scams. If you get a call out of the blue then take a moment, be cautious and reflect.

“Please remember that a genuine caller from a bank or utility company will never put pressure on you to make a payment or demand financial details over the phone.

“These criminals are clever and go to great lengths to appear genuine. They are attempting to fool you and catch you off guard.

“If in any doubt end the call and seek advice from your bank via a number you’ve sourced yourself. If you are concerned you have been the victim of fraud then call Police Scotland on 101.”
