Irvine THISTLE caused a major cup upset as the toppled amateur Premier League high flyers Dailly AFC in the final of the Donsport Trophy.

While Thistle currently sit in fourth place in division 2A, their opponents sit two leagues above, currently second in Ayrshire amateur football’s top division.

This dogged Irvine side did not let this intimidate them, getting on the front foot from the offset.

It was Thistle that broke the deadlock in this showpiece tie at Townhead Park, Cumnock, as Lewis Quigley turned home from six yards after a long throw from Dario Nimmo.

It was an end to end affair but neither side added any further goals before half time.

As Dailly started to pile on the pressure, Thistle would add to their lead to go two up, before a wonder goal from man of the match John ‘the silky ginger’ Pirie put them in a comfortable position.

Their bottle was tested with ten minutes to go when Dailly pulled two goals back in quick succession, but they held on to take away the trophy, much to the delight of all the players and coaching staff. Congratulations from all at the Times!
