An Irvine man who began running during lockdown took on his first marathon to raise money for charity last month.

Craig Paton, 29, completed the Edinburgh Marathon to boost funds for national charity Who Cares? Scotland, which supports care experienced people across the country.

Mr Paton started running to get out of the house and keep himself fit while gyms were closed during the first lockdown.

With his 30th birthday approaching, the keen fundraiser also wanted to mark the occasion by setting himself a challenge that could benefit those in need.

Mr Paton said: “I hope the money raised allows Who Cares? Scotland to continue with its vital work and grow the Care Experienced community.

“If it helps at least one Care Experienced person feel included and part of the Who Cares? Scotland family, that would be incredible.”

He added: “People have been so giving. I’m really thankful for everyone who has donated. I’ve already smashed my fundraising goal and anything on top of that is just fantastic.”

The kind-hearted runner started off with a target of raising £500 for completing the 26.2-mile run.

At the time of writing, he has raised over £900 to support Who Cares? Scotland, which will help the organization to fight for a lifetime of equality, respect and love for car experienced people in Scotland.

Chief executive at Who Cares? Scotland, Louise Hunter, said: “We’re so grateful to Craig for doing the Edinburgh Marathon to raise money for us. We hope he is now taking a well deserved rest with his feet up after his amazing accomplishment.”
