The fire service could not state exactly which vacant building was ablaze, however, plans were recently submitted to North Ayrshire Council regarding the empty maternity buildings.

It is planned that the category B listed maternity residences building be demolished to make way for proposed new build residential properties within the site. An application for the new build housing would follow the approval of the demolition plans.

The application for the demolition states: "Due to ongoing security and safety concerns demolition of the whole building is required. Continued vandalism and fire-raising is worsening the condition of the property."

The application was submitted to NAC on July 23 of this year and is still awaiting approval.
