An Irvine woman who has experienced child loss has climbed 10 Munros in an effort to raise funds for charities within Ayrshire.

Firefighter and mother of two Denise Campbell has scaled the 10 mountains to raise funds for Ayrshire Baby Loss Support and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Family Trust on the tenth anniversary of her child Joseph’s death.

She hopes that her efforts will raise a total of £1,000 to be split equally between both charities.

Denise said: “My son died just after he was born due to complications during the birth. So, because I’ve got two other kids instead of making it a sad day every year, we usually have birthday cake and give out toys in the local park.

“This year I wanted to do something that would commemorate him a bit more and outdoorsy stuff is more my thing, so I was given the idea of walking 10 Munros within a month.

“On his birthday on the 24th, me and the kids are going to walk Conic Hill just next to Loch Lomond and we’re going to have some cake at the top.”

Beginning her challenge on July 26, Denise has so far received an overwhelming amount of support, earning more than five times her initial target of £100.

With approximately £400 left to go until she reaches her updated goal, the fund will remain open until Joseph’s birthday on August 24.

Denise hopes that by raising this money she will be able to give back to the charities that helped her after her tragic experience.

She said: “We couldn’t have done without the service Ayrshire Baby Loss provides. It was really really helpful, and they were offering me things I didn’t even know I could ask for.

“The family trust has been excellent with me over the years and still contacts me offering more support and asking if I want to use their respite place- that’s ten years down the line.

“If child loss happens to you what you need to do is talk and ask questions and a lot of these places either answer your questions for you or put you in the right direction.”

Denise hopes that through her fundraising campaign, she can raise awareness to the vital work that both charities do.
