Police are appealing information after a child was struck by a van in Irvine.

Cops say the two-year-old boy was walking with a 25-year-old woman near a car park entrance on Dickson Drive at around 8.45am on Thursday, August 18 when the tot was hit by a Ford Transit van being driven by a 56-year-old man.

Police and abulance personnel attended and the child was taken by ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow where hospital staff describe his condition as serious.

Sergeant Chris Hoggans from Police Scotland's road policing unit in Irvine said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing into the cause of this crash and I would appeal to any witnesses, or anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police, to contact us.

“This is a busy area and I am aware that a number of people stopped to assist. 

"I would urge anyone who was in the area shortly before the crash, or anyone with dash-cam footage that may assist our investigation to speak to officers."
